On Sunday, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) resumed its work in Uruapan, Michoacan, so Mexican producers can export avocado to the US. Their work had been stopped after authorities decreed the immediate protection of all personnel due to the blockades, fires, and clashes that happened this weekend in communities of Uruapan and other surrounding areas that were protesting the arrest of more than 160 members of Pueblos Unidos.
Now, the inspectors have returned to the fields to continue their monitoring work.
The Association of Avocado Producers, Packers, and Exporters of Mexico (APEAM) informed the unions through its communication channels of the State Department's decision.
This is the second time that US authorities have decided to suspend export work due to violent situations. The first suspension took place on February 12 and lasted for a week. It was made after criminal groups allegedly threatened an officer.
