Direct imports from Southern Europe and North Africa form the core competence of recently founded company IRIS Ltd, based in Viersen. The products are imported from various countries - whether Spain, Morocco or Italy - and then sent on, fresh, inspected and packaged, explains Abdel Jalil Rakkaz, managing director of the Viersen-based wholesale company.

Direct relationship to the origin
The company founder originally comes from the construction industry, but recently ventured into the fruit sector. "We have good contacts with growers in Morocco and are therefore able to import our goods directly, working with minimal stocks. Whether wholesaler or retailer, every customer benefits from our optimal purchasing conditions, reduced procurement costs and our wide supplier and logistics network," says Mr. Rakaz.

Currently, the Moroccan avocado campaign is in full swing, the ambitious wholesaler continues. "We offer our customers a choice of two varieties, the commercial Hass avocado and the Fuerte variety, which is also enjoying increasing demand. Because the avocado is versatile, we also get inquiries outside the traditional fruit industry, such as from cosmetics manufacturers."

Fresh and frozen berries
Furthermore, berries of all kinds are part of the basic assortment of the young company. "We now offer raspberries as frozen fruit, while strawberries are mainly marketed as fresh fruit. Since we are however still in the structure, we cannot exactly estimate the marketing potential of the individual product sections yet."
