Lemons and tangerines with pesticides hit Romanian stores

Romanian authorities have discovered dozens of tons of tangerines and lemons that are treated with dangerous pesticides. General director of Autoritatea Nationala Sanitara Veterinara si pentru Siguranta Alimentelor (ANSVSA), Mihai Ponea, stated that in the last two days alone it was found that 20 tons of lemons, grapes and tangerines contain pesticides.

According to European regulations, samples are collected through the only point of entry in Europe. Only advanced equipment can detect the presence of pesticides. Once the goods arrive in stores, consumers cannot identify contaminated products.

A month ago, the head of ANSVSA said in an interview that a major problem of veterinary services in Romania is the importation of vegetables and fruits from Turkey, where most of the pesticide-contaminated products come from.

“We also had a big challenge this year in the area of vegetables and fruits contaminated with pesticides, which come from Turkey. 90% of what goes into Romania and goes to Europe in vegetables and fruits comes from this area. We are talking about citrus fruits and oranges; Turkey is a concern.”
