The French Potato Interprofessional, CNIPT, has reviewed the 2021 potato campaigns in Poland, Spain, and Italy in its latest newsletter.
According to the IERIGZ-NRI Polish National Institute, Poland's 2021 potato harvest is estimated at 7.4 million tons, i.e. 7.6% less than in 2020, the CNIPT stated. This drop would be due to an 8.7% reduction in national yields, which have averaged 31.5 tons per hectare. The quality also decreased, so analysts expect only 70% of the production will be marketed.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Spain will harvest 2.1 million tons of potatoes in 2021 (+ 3% compared to 2020) in 65,387 hectares. Average yields are estimated at 32.2 tons per hectare, reflecting a 3.3% year-on-year increase.
Italy will produce 1.16 million tons, i.e. 5% more than in the 2020 campaign according to the Italian authorities. However, the operators of the sector expect the volume will be close to or lower than the volume achieved in the previous year. This would be due to the lack of water observed this summer, which had a downward impact on national yields.
