Fewer distant exports of Dutch greenhouse vegetables

Dutch tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers are staying closer to home. Wilco van den Berg of GroentenFruit Huis shows this using figures.

In 2021, 99 percent of the total tomato export in Europe was sold by mid-October. For cucumbers, this is almost 100 percent, whilst for peppers, this number was 98 percent.

Due to the sharp drop in Dutch pepper exports to the United States (fewer flights/higher transport costs), 2 percent of total exports were sold outside Europe this year. In 2019, this was still 9 percent.

In 2020, exports to the United States, for example, already halved, previous figures showed. Sales to Japan remained level in 2021 compared to 2020 making Japan (at position 16) the first sales market of Dutch peppers outside Europe.
