Following his retirement from professional football this past March, longtime NFL quarterback Drew Brees signed on with Avocados From Mexico to be part of its new national shopper marketing campaign. Through this “Big Game" promotion, consumers have a chance to win a $100,000 Smart Home Makeover grand prize or can try to win a selfie with Brees by scanning a QR code on the in-store displays AFM is offering retailers. AFM is also advertising in this year’s big game.
Here Brees spent a few minutes with Freshplaza to talk about avocados and--of course--life after pro football.
What drew you to this campaign?
DB: I’ve always been a huge fan of avocados and guacamole. It was a big part of our family traditions growing up and it carried over to what we do as a family now. I love going to the grocery store with the family. We shop together and pick out different items and come up with different recipes and that’s part of what we do as a family.
My kids are very familiar with Avocados from Mexico and the jingle so this became a very natural, authentic relationship.
How has your avocado consumption changed since you’ve entered retirement?
DB: I probably eat more avocados now. So many of my meals in the past were at the team facility and and they were prepared for us. Now I have a choice because I’m preparing my own meals.
Avocados are a big part of my breakfast. I put them on eggs, I have avocado toast, I’ll eat it as a mid-morning snack as a workout--I scoop it out of the shell with salt and pepper or make an avocado tomato salad. And then with family get togethers, we’re always making guacamole.
What’s your favourite way to eat avocados?
DB: Probably guac. It’s hard to miss there.
So much of your career was in New Orleans. How much did avocados fit into the cuisine there?
DB: That’s a good question. If you’re a creative chef or someone who’s a foodie, I think you find ways to incorporate things you like into what you eat. That’s the great thing about avocados. They can really be incorporated into a lot of things and add a lot of value.
Aside from this, what else are you working on right now?
DB: I’m working on all kinds of stuff. There’s a lot going on with our foundation, projects in New Orleans around housing, healthcare, education, economic opportunity and development and job creation.
On the business side, a ton of stuff with franchising, real estate development and I’m broadcasting with NBC. I’m also raising four kids with my wife Brittany and travelling the country broadcasting. My life’s pretty crazy right now.
Finally, any early Super Bowl predictions?
DB: Not that but I’ll give you my top three--in the AFC, Buffalo and Tennessee are playing pretty well. I don’t think they’ll be a Super Bowl contender but they’re playing well. On the NFC side, Arizona looks good. The Rams look good and the Packers.
