Prime Minister wants to revamp Cameroon's banana industry

On September 29, Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute chaired a meeting dedicated to seeking ways to revamp his nation’s banana sector. The government has set out to revamp the banana sector, one of the key pillars of Cameroon's economy. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER), Gabriel Mbairobe claims the government seeks to reach an annual production of 500,000 tons of bananas by 2030. Production reached about 300,000 tons in 2016.

Minister Mbairobe has stated that the PM prescribed measures his Ministry now has to implement. One of the measures has to do with empowering UTV in charge of treating banana plantations and also to find ways to rehabilitate the banana plantations. Prime Minister Ngute specifically instructed MINADER to look for new pesticides and new aircraft to treat new banana plantations.
