The onion market has livened up over the past few days: nothing major, but demand has picked up, so quotations have recovered. "Up until a few days ago, things were dead calm, then something changed and phone calls have become more frequent," reports tradesman Matteo Freddi.
According to Freddi, many clients who were waiting for onions from India and Australia have had to put up to the delays caused by the obstruction of the Suez Canal, so they need to fill the gap.
"Italian onions are very popular at the moment. Do not forget that a couple of months will go by before early yellow ones become available. The quality of the produce in storage units is still high and quantities are enough to cover the period until the next harvest will become available."
As for quotations, they vary depending on the area, grade and quality. They are currently around €0.25-0.35/kg for golden onions and approximately the same for unprocessed white ones.
"Shallots are reaching record figures of €2.5-3.5/kg depending on origin and quality. Borettana onions are not doing as well as demand is low due to the closures in the H&R channel and the fact that the processing industry still has abundant quantities available."
