Benoît Maillard-Guillon, of Ets Meseguer:

"The geopolitical situation does not help stimulate citrus sales"

"It is quiet in the citrus market," says Benoît Maillard-Guillon, of Ets Meseguer, in Rungis. "The geopolitical situation does not help stimulate sales. In general, trade is good when things are going well. After the terrorist attacks and the spread of Covid-19, there is a great feeling of fear and unease across France. People just buy the basic necessities. For now, trade has come to a standstill."

Benoît says that the period between October 15 and November 15 is always quiet in the French market, with not much enthusiasm for fruits and vegetables. "The school holidays of the last two weeks have not helped in giving the market a boost. I'd say that the current situation is a normal one for this time of the year. We are not selling more or less than usual."

During the first lockdown, citrus sales increased considerably. However, during this second wave, sales have not increased. "We have seen activity resume somewhat after the president's message, who announced a second lockdown. Buyers, especially purchasing centers, anticipated the move, but the president's message has not had a great impact on the final sales figures."

This year, Ets Meseguer has started a few weeks earlier than in the previous one for all products, including lemons, grapefruit and clementines. The quality is at the expected level, especially the taste quality. The company will start with the first Spanish navelina oranges next week.
