Frosts are having a negative impact on the harvest of berries in Poland. There are many damaged flowers on blueberries and strawberries, the result of the cold weather that prevailed in Poland last week. A sharp cooling fell during the flowering of berry crops.
It was not only the berry plantations that suffered, fruit producers also suffered losses due to cold weather. Marek Charnoki, a fruit producer from the town of Chepelin in the Mazovian Voivodeship, in his interview with the newspaper Vyborcha, said that he had lost 90% of the apple harvest because of the severe frost.
According to Polish growers, the most severe weather affected the state of the plantations of early varieties of berries. Some farms are already claiming significant crop losses. However, to date, only losses from frost are being calculated, the results of which will be known in a couple of weeks.
In the meantime, Polish growers began to actively raise prices for domestic strawberries. At the beginning of this week the price of this product has grown by an average of 35% and today it goes on sale at a price of $2.33-4.15 / kg.
Also, on the market there are imported strawberries from Spain. Prices for imported berries are in the range of $2.33-3.11 / kg.
It is worth noting that today the local strawberries on the Polish market are offered for sale on average 1.7 times more than in the middle of May of last year. But at the same time, the majority of key market players do not exclude that in the near future the price in this segment may drop significantly. They say that the weather conditions are stabilizing, as a result of which the supply of strawberries from local farms will increase.
