Wisconsin: Lawmakers requesting USDA's help with cranberry surplus

In Wisconsin, Lawmakers are asking the USDA to help out cranberry farmers who are suffering due to a low demand for the holiday fruit. They are requesting that the government buy surplus cranberries unwanted by consumers in the market. The Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association noted the lack of demand for the fruit and the bad timing as the season has been abundant.

"The best way to address the issue is to talk about how do we generate more interest in cranberries, how do we get consumers to incorporate more cranberries in their diet, and what products can we develop to make them more appealing," said executive director, Tom Lochner after discussing the idea of the government buying the surplus from farmers.

Wisconsin currently exports 35-40% of the crop, making it one of the top growers in the world.
