India: Garlic industry fuelled by Northern and Central states
India is known as a major player in the garlic export industry, alongside countries such as South Korea, China and Egypt. The country’s garlic usually comes from Northern & Central India.
According to one of India’s garlic exporting companies, Aradhana Mishra, Director of Xtrovert Global Pvt Ltd , based in Mumbai India: "India’s production of garlic is focused in the North and Central region of the country. Around 70% of the country’s garlic comes from the Mandsaur, Neemuch and Indore districts in Madhya Pradesh, as well as Rajasthan. Other notable producing states are Gujarat, Solan in Himachal Pradesh and Ooty in Tamil Nadu.
Different regions produce different varieties of garlic: white garlic in Madhya Pradesh which is size 2.5 – 5 cm, while purple garlic is grown in Himachal Pradesh, which is about 8.5 cm.”
Garlic is a crop that is very sensitive to the climate. “It is a rain dependent crop. But despite the rough conditions, Xtrovert Global is able to supply year round with the peak season happening during December to April. It also helps that the Indian government is very active in supporting the industry. It helps educate farmers in better methods of cultivating garlic, it facilitates loans for farmers and it purchases crops from farmers at a reasonable rate," says Mishra.
Indian garlic is known to be superior in quality. The garlic is used as garlic paste for medical formulations for digestive or respiratory medicine, which the company says is exported to South East Asia and the Gulf countries.
