Italy: Investments in agriculture beneficial to the tourist sector

Agriculture is a driving force for development, not only for the primary sector but for tourism as well. This concept has been embraced by the Lake Garda area, especially in the Trento province. The third edition of Garda con Gusto took place between 3rd and 5th November 2017. The event is organised by Garda Trentino and has the aim of promoting local products and the territory.

"Our extraordinary products include Broccolo di Torbole, saffron from Val di Ledro, plums from Dro, apples, some native potatoes and all processed products," explained Walter Sestili from 'Garda Outdoors'.

Maurizio Rossini, President of Trentino Marketing

Maurizio Rossini, President of Garda Trentino, talked about the value of agriculture: "the investments made in agriculture help everyone, especially the tourist sector. First of all, because agriculture shapes and safeguards the landscape."

"What is more, typical local products make the cuisine of a particular territory unique. Lastly, tourists are looking for beauty and good food and are willing to visit agricultural businesses. The entire community has something to gain from safeguarding producers."

Dried apples and persimmons

"Maso Giare" displayed its dried persimmons, an innovation compared to more traditional apples. The drying process lasts 22 hours and must start with fruit that is medium ripe. Other new products are green kiwi and Golden apple juice and kiwi jam.

Christmas walnuts

"Osti Marco", which has been working in the organic sector for the past 30 years, had a brilliant idea. As the frost in spring led to low walnut volumes, the owners thought about placing the few walnuts harvested in clear baubles with a red ribbon, perfect as Christmas decorations.

There was also a show cooking event with local products. Chef Antonio Lamberto Martino stressed the importance of using fruit and vegetables in restaurants.

Of course one of the ingredients used was Briccolo di Torbole. The chef also highlighted how it is a moral duty to pay a fair price for agricultural products so that growers can make a profit and continue working the land.
