Increasing interest for Ukrainian apples from NW Europe

The Ukrainian market has received a lot of interest this year from other countries looking for apples. However, finding enough class 1 apples to meet demand is a difficult request to fill, after production was decreased by 10-20% after the spring frosts and a later by 5-7% during a early summer hail storm.

"We have entered some new contracts this year with the Dutch and UK market, along with the Czech Republic and Baltic countries, and have been sending out some trial shipments. We have already tested Granny Smith, Fuji, Pinova, Breiburn and Golden's in the Netherlands and Czech Republic. Just like last year, we have been testing Royal Gala and Golden Delicious in the UK. We have received a lot of order for Asia, especially India, be we have to wait until the trade agreement between our countries have been reached," said Maxim Kulik.

The most commonly produced varieties in Ukraine are Aidared, Semerenko, Gloster and Red Chief (amongst others), but varieties such as as Orion, Sirius and Luna have been gaining in popularity over the last few years.

This season's apples will be available until next May/June since there are enough cold stores to handle this season's production. Maxim said that the current price is around what he had expected and continues to slowly increase, from €0.44/kg (EXW) in September to €0.48/kg (EXW) in early November, depending on packaging and terms.

"This season is really important to us because we have been given the opportunity to prove that Ukraine can export high quality apples and fulfil all of the EU customer requirements. After all of this new interest in our apples this year, imagine what we might be able to achieve next year with the good season and high quality apples we expect to have!" exclaimed Maxim.
