Italy: Update on pear production forecasts at OI Pera
The Italian pear production shouldn't vary much from what was forecast a few months ago despite the uncertainty regarding fruit development caused by the summer high temperatures and drought.
In particular, the production of the Abate variety confirms a growth exceeding 10% compared to last year, going back to being in line with the average of the past four years.

The Kaiser and Santa Maria productions will also increase after being particularly penalised last year. Volumes of Conference pears will be lower due to the fewer cultivated areas, while William and Decana volumes should be similar to last year.
Overall, the saleable production should be 7% higher than last year.
"The official figures will be available in a few weeks' time but, if they are confirmed as we believe, supply will be slightly more abundant than 2016 and in line with 2013-2016. Quality is good and stock levels show a normal sales rhythm for the period. 14% of Abate pears have been sold until mid-October, in line with last year," explains Gianni Amidei, President of OI Pera.
"Production, market, export and consumption trends will be analysed at the 'Mercato e consumi: i nuovi trend e le sfide future' convention which will be held in Ferrara on 17th November 2017 as part of the FuturPera international fair. On 16th November, during the 'Abate Fetel: aumentare le rese per una maggiore redditività ' convention, international operators will compare techniques to improve yields of the Italian top cultivar."
