France: Ready to eat fruit and vegetables not always as good as fresh
Journalist Manuel Tissier went on the French television channel, France 2, with the nutritionist Béatrice de Reynal to test the quality of different fresh cut products. They began with salads that come in bags and sucrine lettuce hearts. The journalist said that, “They both have one thing in common, they are cleaned in chlorine. Sometimes that means a taste that is not always nice for the consumer. Above all, they are selected in a way that means there are more white leaves than green leaves,” and concluded that “It is better to consumer salads from the market”.
However, they did say that some products are equivalent to market produce, notably carrots. “Bags of grated carrots contain as much beta-carotene, which is a pro-vitamin A, as carrots that you get individually in the supermarket or market”. Particular attention should be paid to potatoes as a preservative is added to stop them turning grey. The same applies for fruit and more nutritional benefits are found in fresh or frozen fruit.
