Hainan is a tropical island in the South of China. The province is known for its fresh fruit production and has abundant tropical crop resources. Widespread crops are dragon fruit, papaya, mango, watermelon and musk melon, banana
and carambola.

Hainan is an important vegetable supplier to the Mainland in winter. The fruit and vegetable trade from Hainan, counter seasonal, is lucrative and farmers have the ability to invest in labour, irrigation, seed and greenhouse technology.

This summer, the government of Hainan has announced that it will invest in the island's winter crops and establish additional breeding centres and tropical fruit centres. This is to replace sugar cane and paddy rice that have a relatively low return on investment. The government wants to elevate output to 170 billion Yuan a year, equal to €24.5 billion.
