Baden-Württemberg: Increased cultivation in polytunnel

Germany: Decent soft fruit harvest despite drought

Despite the prolonged drought and extreme high temperatures a total of 8990 metric tons of soft fruit was harvested in Baden-Württemberg in 2015. According to preliminary collected data of the Statistical Office the yield was equal to the previous year (+1%). The most important berry variety is the black currants with a harvest of 3075 metric tons, more than a third of the harvest.

This was a slight increase of 3% compared to 2014. The red and white currants follow, however the 2617 metric tons don’t reach the level of the previous year (-4%).
The production of raspberries cultivated in the open field struggled with an even stronger decrease of -15%. Contrary to this blackberries coped better and achieved an increased yield of 628 metric tons (+31%). The soft fruit comes increasingly from protected cultivation, a yield of 491 metric tons (+83%) this year.

The soft fruit is cultivated at a total acreage of 1722 hectares, and the main part is open field cultivation (1664 ha, an increase of 38 ha). The black currants are cultivated on the largest acreage of 705 ha and in recent years the surface increased (+19 ha). However the largest increase showed the red and white currants (+37% ha) cultivated on 339 ha.

Aronia (chokeberries) and blueberries also increased in their production areas. The clear decrease of open field raspberries to 270 ha (-46 ha) is probably due to the reaction on the pest vinegar fly of last year. Instead the cultivation in polytunnels or greenhouses increased by 25 ha to 58 ha compared to 2014. The main part being raspberries, with 38 ha.
