Cold storage capacity cannot cover ample supply

China banana output +30%

In China the average retail price of banana hoovers around 2 Yuan (€0.30) per kilogram, with occasional outliers of 1.5 Yuan per kilogram.

Abundant supply due to expanded plantation areas in Southers regions such as Guangdong and Guangxi has lead to a saturated market. Production volumes is estimated to be 30% higher than in the 2014 season.

There are not enough cold storage rooms to keep the bananas for longer. As a result, bananas are sold immediately. This takes away the opportunity for farmers to sell their crop later on at better prices.
