Nijs van Zuilen, Berrybrothers:

"Demand for red currants doubles around Christmas"

"At the moment the sales of red currants is calm, but that's normal for this time of year. Over the last few weeks a lot of berries were sold and the stores are comparable to last year. We also expect to continue with the Dutch product until April. Then we switch to Rovada from Chile," says Nijs van Zuilen of Berrybrothers, one of the largest red berry growers in Europe with a production area of over 70 hectares.

According to the grower, the red currants look good as far as quality is concerned. "Some currants got burned during the warm summer week at the start of August, but they left at the end of August/start of September. The red currants, which are now offered, are good quality. The sales price of the red berries at Berrybrothers is at a comparable level to last year."

"Competition from other European countries is lessening because the production countries elsewhere are running out now. The productions in Italy are declining. I expect more demand from that corner around Christmas. The holidays are always good for the currant sales. Between week 50 and 1 the sales volumes double," says Nijs.

In February 2016 Berrybrothers will participate in the Fruit Logistica in Berlin for the second time. "Last year our participation and new packaging line was very well received, so we are looking forward to the fair next year."
