China: grapefruit prices drop slightly

A bumper crop of grapefruit hits the Chinese market. The market supply is adequate and prices are slightly lower than last month.

Fujian is China's main grapefruit production area. This year's weather circumstances were good, causing an extremely high grapefruit output. The total output amount increased by 2% compared with the same period last year. Prices dropped from the moment grapefruit entered the market.

Currently the white grapefruit wholesale price is 2.1 Yuan per 0.5 kilo, 16% lower than prices last year in the same period. The red grapefruit wholesale price is approximately 3.7 Yuan per 0.5 kilo, 17.78% lower than last year. The yellow grapefruit wholesale price is approximately 3 Yuan per 0.5 kilo.

The price of small Fujian honey grapefruit is 8 Yuan per 0.5 kilo. Medium and large white grapefruit are sold for 3.5 Yuan per 0.5 kilo. On the Beijing market the Fujian white grapefruit retail price is 3.8 Yuan per 0.5 kilo and the selling price of red grapefruit is 5.8 Yuan per 0.5 kilo.

Besides the increased output, the grapefruit price is also dropping due to declining prices on the whole fruit market. Currently the apple and citrus prices are dropping, causing the grapefruit price to decline as well. At this moment, the price drop may not seem very substantial. However, along with a persistent demand and the gradually decreasing supply, the falling range is limited.
