Fer Smit and Gerard Breed, JH Wagenaar:

"Demand for cabbage early this season"

The market situation for red and white cabbage is good right now, "Currently, growers are working hard to harvest the crops. The weather has been great over the last few weeks, which means the cabbage is dry and clean. Throughout the season cabbage has been selling well, we have barely any stock and that results in good prices. Large white cabbage is selling for 23/24 cents and large red cabbage for 30 cents," says Fer Smit from JH Wagenaar, part of The Greenery, located in Hoogkarspel, the Netherlands.

Fer says the yields in the Netherlands are 'just right', "Due to the weather conditions it was not an easy year, but everything has worked out pretty well. We are very happy with the quality and are entering the new month with our heads held high. Demand for cabbage is spread out, but is primarily coming from Western Europe. England, Germany and the manufacturing industry is doing well," says Fer. His colleague, Gerard Breed who handles export, agrees, "It is obvious that the general mood is good right now. Over the upcoming weeks cabbage will be coming in from everywhere and supply and demand will balance out. There are areas in Germany and Eastern Europe where much was lost because of the drought. This is why demand for cabbage started early, which led to a good first few months."

In recent months there has also been a great deal of demand. But demand was not met everywhere because of the higher prices. Volumes in the Netherlands and Germany have already shrunk quite a bit due to sales, which is of course good for the price. It is still difficult to assess what the cabbage situation will be like in Eastern Europe (for Dutch export) at the end of the year and for the second half of the export season," continues Gerard. "The current optimism does not guarantee good sales for stored cabbage in the upcoming months. There are many areas in which the growing situation appears to be normal. Over the next few weeks the amount of available volumes for the second half of the season will become clear. But for now the mood is good."
