Mexico: Tabasco will export up to 13,600 tons of bananas to Europe

The Banana Growers Association of Sierra de Teapa estimated they would export up to 13,600 tons of bananas to Europe through the port of Dos Bocas, Paraiso, this year.

Adrian Leal Prats, head of the organization, announced they would be shipping this year's third shipment of bananas, with a volume of 3,400 tons, via Tabasco's port next week.

He said they had just sent the second shipment of the fruit last weekend and that their goal was to make four shipments in the year, which would "help decongest the domestic banana market, raise prices and benefit producers."

At the same time, he said in an interview, banana producers in the area continue to export a weekly average of 75 containers through the port of Veracruz.

He said that, besides the producers of Tabasco, producers from Tapachula, Chiapas, were also exporting their fruit but to a lesser extent.

Leal Prats stated that they were preparing a campaign, with funds from the Agency Services Marketing and Development of Agricultural Markets, to encourage the consumption of this fruit in the Mexican market.

The purpose of the campaign, he added, is to increase people's yearly banana consumption, which is currently 13 to 14 kg/year, by at least three kilograms.
