Spain: Canary Islands aim to keep ban on Moroccan citrus
The MP of the Canarian Nationalist Group (CC-PNC-CCN) for Lanzarote, Juan Pedro Hernández, denounced that Morocco's intention to export its citrus to the Canary Islands "would be a deathblow for the Islands' growers, both in financial and phytosanitary terms."
According to Juan Pedro, Morocco is currently in negotiations with representatives of the Customs service "to attempt introducing its citrus to the Islands by marketing towards the tourism sector and their export to Europe. This would be unfair for Canarian growers, who would be the most affected as they would not be able to compete with Morocco's prices. Not to forget the phytosanitary problems they could bring."
In this sense, Juan Pedro Hernández stated that the Moroccan produce could introduce pests that do not exist in the Islands, and thus asked the Spanish and Canarian Governments "not to modify the current phytosanitary legislation."
