Spain: Agricultural campaign in danger due to lack of rainfall

The lack of rainfall has put the agricultural campaign in jeopardy, as deduced from the report prepared by COAG Andalucia and UPA Andalucia, in which the current situation of the various sectors has been put under scrutiny.

After 2012, which was the rainiest year of the 21st century, the tables have turned completely in 2013, with a rain deficit of between 50 and 75% in almost every Andalusian province. In any case, water reservoirs are at good levels, allowing crop irrigation to be carried out normally; however, this results in higher production costs.

If draughts continue, with the increased use of irrigation water, energy consumption will be greater, with a cost of almost 165 million Euro, while in a year with normal levels of rainfall the cost would only amount to 120 million.

Some sectors are especially affected, such as olive and citrus producers.

The lack of rainfall has also led to a slight reduction in fruit calibres, which is affecting its marketing.
