European Union visit organic banana plantations, Dominican Republic
Representatives of the European Union and the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Agriculture visited a couple of ecological banana plantations in the Northwest of the Dominican Republic to observe the process of producing this export fruit.
As part of the actions prior to the start of the Banana Accompanying Plan, which will fund the Dominican sector with nearly 900 million pesos (more than 15.3 million Euro), the mission went to the premises of the Plantaciones del Norte Farm and to another farm belonging to the Banana Growers Association of the Northwest (Banelino).
The commission of the European Union that visited the plantations saw first hand the good labour practices that are implemented in both farms and also noted that there was no child labour employed in the banana plantations and that the human resources management standards required by European countries are being respected in the Dominican Republic.
The representatives were also shown the technology used to operate these plantations, which have the highest yields of the Dominican Republic, and help the country be the world's biggest organic banana exporter.
During the tour, the European representatives reported that the Banana Accompanying program would begin before the end of 2013.
