Lidl: Largest client for Spanish horticultural products
The Spanish suppliers of the German supermarket chain Lidl closed 2012 with a turnover of over 2,500 million Euro; 14% more than in 2011. Lidl has already become the largest client for Spanish horticultural products.
In 2012 alone, Lidl purchased 960,000 tonnes of Spanish fruit and vegetables, generating 860 million Euro in revenue for the sector. This corresponds to 6% of the value of Spain's total horticultural production. Over the past five years, Lidl's commercial transactions with its Spanish suppliers have increased by around 22%, generating a total turnover of 10,990 million Euro.
Gema B. Muñoz stresses that the German chain has not only increased its purchasing volumes, but also the number of suppliers. In 2008, Lidl carried out transactions with 230 Spanish suppliers; five years later, the number has grown to 368, which is around 60% more.
As a result of Lidl's business model, the products are not only distributed among the chain's 527 shops in Spain, but also to approx. 10,000 all over Europe.
In 2012, the value of Spanish products marketed abroad reached 1,200 million Euro; 9% more than in the previous year. Over the past five years, the total value of Spanish products purchased by Lidl amounts to 5,650 million Euro.
