Murcia: Artichoke harvest up by 1%

The artichoke harvest from Spain's Murcia region is estimated to be 86.726 tonnes this year, reports the German Agramarkt Information Service (AMI) on its website. This is an increase of 1% on last year.

Murcia is by far the most important producer of artichokes within Spain and around 42% of the total national harvest is grown here. Other important growing regions for artichokes are Valencia and Andalusia. In the EU, after Italy, Spain is the second most important producer of artichokes and in 2012 produced a total of 204.600 tonnes.

The majority of the artichokes produced in Murcia end up on the domestic market. Export volume is only 3.300 tonnes, just 4% of the total volume. Nevertheless, 34% of the total of Spanish artichokes come from Murcia. The main export destinations are Italy and France.

Over the past decade the total amount of fields for growing artichokes has increased in Murcia by 14% to 7,347 hectares.
