US (CA): Stronger prices, demand for asparagus

Robust demand for asparagus coming into the U.S. has made for prices this December which are higher than in past years.

The majority of asparagus coming into the U.S. right now is coming from Peruvian producers, and what has been coming in has been received warmly here, according to Kristen Francsico, vice president of sales and marketing for Gourmet Trading Company.

“Prices for December have been stronger this year,” said Francisco. “Demand has also been higher than in previous years.” In addition to supplies from Peru, Gourmet Trading is also importing some supplies from Mexican producers, though those supplies will wind down this month. Peruvian supplies will continue through January, and then Mexican supplies will pick up again in January with asparagus from Caborca, Sonora. In terms of volumes imported, supplies have been mostly steady with some variation, according to Scott Hulsey, vice president of procurement for Gourmet Trading.

“Asparagus supplies have been fairly stable and there are similar volumes to last year,” said Hulsey. “Typical supply patterns have been different to historical trends, creating peaks in the market.”
