Fresón de Palos expects to reach 73,000 tonnes
Spain: Huelva's strawberry campaign looking good
Huelva's strawberry campaign is almost ready to kick off. The harvest has just started, although production volumes are still low and it'll be necessary to wait until early January for them to start peaking.
"From now until January, we will mainly supply the Spanish domestic market, and in January we will start exporting strawberries all over Europe," explain sources from Fresón de Palos.
Unlike last season, which was one of the worst in recent memory as a result of the many storms which led to severe losses in quality and production volumes, "this year's prospects are very good and the first strawberries harvested are of the highest quality," they state.
Production volumes are expected to reach around 73,000 tonnes. For now, "it seems that we will have a normal year, given the weather conditions we had during the development period of plants and fruit. Additionally, we now have cold, sunny weather."
Founded in 1982 in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, Fresón de Palos is the world's largest strawberry producer; a leading company that represents the union of more than 150 associates and the work of more than 5,000 people.
For the present campaign, Fresón de Palos will count with the recently incorporated Commercial Director, Vicente Jiménez Guijarro, who will take up the challenge after 8 years' experience in the sector.
Given the results of the 2013 campaign, it appears Huelva's strawberry sector has managed to withstand the recession really well, with close to 200,000 tonnes exported and a total of approximately 320 million Euro in revenue.
