Switzerland: less vegetables in storage

Cultivation of vegetables for storage met with difficulties in 2013. The results of this are smaller harvest yields and smaller vegetables. The cold and wet weather caused delays in the growth of between two and three weeks, which could not be made up.
Also the summer heat caused problems for the vegetables. These difficult weather conditions caused harvest losses and small sized vegetables.

The quantity of vegetables in storage is therefore clearly less than the average of the last few years. On 15 November there was 39,790 tonnes of carrots in storage. That is the smallest quantity since 2003/2004 and 3,730 tonnes less than the average of the last three years. The quantity of celeriac in storage is also extremely low with 6,206 tonnes. That is namely a 20% smaller quantity than the average of the last three years.

The stored quantity of red cabbage amounts to 2,096 tonnes (-21% compared to the last three years) and the quantity of stored onions is 19,745 tonnes. This is in reality 9% less than last year, but clearly more than in the years 2008 to 2010.
