Vegetable market in a hole, bananas better, pineapple still in dip

The vegetable market is in a hole, according to a telephone survey of traders. The high temperatures in Spain have, for example, not done trade any favours. As the greenhouse vegetables, iceberg lettuce, and broccoli have been cheap in the last few weeks in The Netherlands, the Spanish have had to wait with their harvest. Eventually, however, the vegetables had to leave and they then arrived in The Netherlands a little too mature.

After a difficult few weeks the banana market has finally improved. Supermarket chain Jumbo recently promoted a low price guarantee of 99 cents per kilo and soon enough all supermarkets followed. In the meantime, while the stocks ran out through the supermarket competition, the pineapple market has been battling for weeks. Supply is large and prices are under cost.
