The market for organic products in France could reach 4,500 million in 2013
Throughout this year, the organic food sector will continue to perform well despite the stagnation of conventional agribusiness, since in the last five years (2007-2012) the French organic market has doubled, up to the 4,170 million Euro recorded last year.
Agence Bio has also revealed that, in order to meet growing consumer demand, the number of French producers has increased in the first half of the year and now exceeds the 25,000 mark compared to the 24,425 that had been recorded in late 2012.
The agricultural area devoted to organic production has also increased, by the end of 2012 there were over a million hectares grown organically (855,644 certified hectares and 177,297 hectares in conversion), 6% more than in 2011.
Currently, France produces just over three quarters of the organic food it consumes, according to Agence Bio, which has indicated that imports of organic products (both from Community countries as well as from other countries) have gone from 38% in 2009 to 25% in 2012.
In addition, exports of their products have made a significant jump of over 60% between 2011 and 2012, from 192 million to 309 million Euro in the past year.
