Ribera (Sicily)

Italy: Val Di Verdura getting ready for citrus harversting

Everything is almost ready at the Società Agricola Val Di Verdura, located in Ribera (Sicily), to start harvesting Ribera PDO oranges for the 2013/14 campaign - only two weeks to go.

Thanks to the traditions of its associates and to the fact that it is located in an area with a wonderful weather, fertile land and three rivers (Verdura, Magazzolo and Platani), the Società Agricola Val Di Verdura is exceptionally qualified for the sale of Ribera oranges, extra-virgin olive oil and fruit (apricots, Coscia pears, peaches and tangerines). It supplies high-quality products obtained after strict selections which, in the case of oranges, are also guaranteed by the P.D.O. mark.

According to what Giovanni Martorana, sales and marketing manager for the company, told FreshPlaza, harvesting will take place according to the following chart.

Product
Harvesting date
Navelina Oranges05/11/2013
Clementines05/11/2013
Vaniglia Apireno Oranges01/12/2013
Washington Navel Oranges15/12/2013

"Harvesting dates though depend on the weather. Temperature changes and low temperatures at night can favour the ripening and colouring of fruits."

A 15% reduction of volumes is expected due to the alternation between more and less productive years. Quality though is excellent, with medium-big grades. No malformations due to thrips, cochineals or other insects have been noticed.

The unique organoleptic qualities of PDO Ribera oranges guarantee high juice contents, a perfect balance between acids and sugars and a sweet and crunchy taste.
