"Smaller size, but good outlook for Spanish citrus"
The outlook for Spanish citrus is looking good, according to importer Willem Koole from Frukar in Barendrecht. The company presently delivers Spanish Clementine's and Satsuma's with and without leaves. "The present price level is reasonably good. The only question is can it get better, and now the weather in and out of Europe has become colder and customers are catching colds again I expect demand will increase."
"The harvest was delayed due to the warm weather in Spain. The nights were too warm (+ 22ºC) and during the day it was over 30ºC, so the fruit does not have the good dark colour. The taste is good for the time of year. The colour has nothing to do with the taste," explained the importer. "It is now becoming colder in Spain, so we will quickly start to see larger numbers arriving with the right colour."
"In terms of volume, mandarins are the same as last year, but they are just a size smaller because there was less rainfall in recent month's," said the trader. "We expect to see oranges arrive around 24 October. This year we expect more oranges in the harvest but due to the limited rainfall, they will also be smaller. We now see lemons arriving daily, but the harvest volume is the same as last year."
