Brazil: Launch of new cherry variety

Brazilian company Embrapa Agroindustria Tropical, in a bid to market vitamin C, has developed a new cherry variety. The variety, cultivated in cooperation with Nutrilite, is said to be more profitable and yield more vitamin C per hectare. Launched under the name BRS 366 Jaburu, the new cherry tree purportedly yields 100 kg of cherries in a single year.

“BRS 366 Jaburu is almost 20% more productive than the number 2 on the list, the Mineira,” claims Francisco Vidal Neto, an Embrapa Agroindustrial Tropical investor who was part of the developing team.

One of the benefits of the new variety is that it’s very suited to both manual and mechanical harvesting, according to breeders.
