"Belgium: "Leek prices up because of winter weather”"

The winter has arrived in earnest and this usually translates in high demands for leek. “Compared to last year both demand and price are up,” says Guy de Meyer of Belgian leek company Demargro. “Last week the price was around 38 cents and now it’s up to 53. I expect prices to rise even further in the coming weeks.”

“The high price levels are caused by dropping temperatures throughout Europe,” Guy thinks. “This has led to a rise in consumption of winter vegetables. Consumption isn’t skyrocketing or anything, but there’s definitely a strong increase. Countries are having trouble meeting these demands because of heavy snowfall. Orders from Germany and France are pouring in. Even the UK and Eastern Europe are buying our leek. We expect the volumes to these destinations to rise even further in the next few weeks.”
