"Richard Soepenberg: "Strongly changing volumes and vegetable prices due to cold"

Organic Hass avocado season starts at Frunet Bio

The Spanish winter season has started at Frunet Bio. After a good mango season the company from Malaga has started selling Spanish vegetables and Hass-avocados. "In organic terms we are a good player in Hass avocados with a weekly volume of around 25,000 -30,000 tonnes per week," says commercial employee Richard Soepenberg.

Frunet Bio gets their organic Hass avocados from their own cultivation and a number of growers in their area. Richard expects to market around the same volume as last year. The organic company sells the products through the whole of Europe. The main purchasing countries are France, Sweden, Germany and the United Kingdom.

The Spanish vegetable season is also in full swing at the moment. According to Richard the tomato market is under pressure due to a large supply. "We have had twice as much rain as last year, and this meant that we had some quality issues with tomatoes until about two weeks ago. The quality of the tomatoes is good now."

The temperature in Spain is around 11°C at the moment, and for Spain, this is pretty cold. "The cold has really influenced the growing process. It has caused big fluctuations in volumes and prices. They vary wildly per week, especially among cucumbers and courgettes," concludes the exporter.
