US: Sun Maid celebrates 100 years with gusto
The even attracted about 1,500 people who were treated to an entertaining program and good eats including steak with raisin sauce.
The company reported record net sales of $360.9 million by its 800 growers. Sun Maid’s growers also will receive a record payment ranging from $1,760 to $1,780 per ton for their latest raisin crop.
Barry Kriebel, Sun Maid president, said that because of strong demand for raisins, the last of the 2011 crop should be sold by January 2013.
The event included looked back at the history of Sun-Maid and celebrated the release of a book, “Sun Maid Raisins & Dried Fruits: Serving American Families and the World since 1912.”
Also, the growers - including some that have worked with Sun-maid for more than 50 years - were honored during the centennial edition of the co-op’s annual meeting. The meeting featured guest speaker Paul Mobley, an award-winning photographer whose photos can be seen in the book, “American Farmer: The Heart of Our Country.”
Mobley’s presentation included recent portraits of Sun Maid’s long-standing grower-members.
