Italy: Angeleno plum campaign almost finished
"We are in the final stage of the marketing year - says Lanconelli - The available product is all involved with the programs we have already made with the large-scale retailers. Demand is good, as the supply is gradually decreasing. New productions from the southern hemisphere will be available in a couple of weeks."
"The prices are lower by about 10% from the previous year, due to higher production and to the economic crisis that has affected demand and therefore sales," he continues.
With regard to the production cycle, the sales manager said: "We have had a drought and very high temperatures throughout the summer. This, on the one hand contributed to very high values for the sugar content of the fruit (Brix), On the other hand caused gauges below average. Later, in early September 2012, there was a week of rain that caused the phenomena of cracking (cracks in the skin) over almost the entire production."
Given the quality issues, we have been unable to make shipments to markets "far away", so production was distributed in Italy (about one quarter) and mainly in European distribution chains.
