Netherlands: 6% more cucumbers under hazed glass

Wageningen UR Glastuinbouw in Bleiswijk, Holland has monitored the effect of glass with a 71% haze on the production, quality and energy use of cucumbers. The early crop was compared to produce cultivated in a greenhouse with standard glass. The trial lasted from late December to late April. As it turned out, the plants under hazed glass flourished more rapidly and the duration of growth was half a day shorter on average. Eventually, the yield amassed under darkened glass was about 6% larger.

Hazed glass did not, however, influence quality. The measured light transmission in the darkened glass greenhouse was on average 2.5% higher than in the other nurseries. The darkened greenhouse displayed over 35% more condensation. The energy consumption increased by 5% under diffuse glass, but because of the higher production, the energy efficiency is equal with that of the reference greenhouse.
