William Nannes (Beemsterboer): Good demand for pink Crimsun onion

"Onion market reasonably steady; Africa is a stable buyer"

The onion export is going reasonably well. This was said by William Nannes of the company Beemsterboer from Warmenhuizen. "We mainly focus on the market outside of Europe. There you can see that buyers such as the Far East, Malaysia and Brazil, that a lot of onions went to at the beginning of the season, are quiet at the moment. The East Block isn't in the market yet. There are a lot of onions heading to Africa, mainly Senegal. The downside is that you are dependent on when the boats sail."

The bale price of onions is at an unchanged level around 15/16 Euro. "The farmer is quite secure and experience says that they will lay low until January. The farm prices are around 12 cents at the moment. I don't need to tell you that this makes it difficult to earn money as a packaging station or exporter."

"If you had stocked up at the beginning of the season, you would have been sorted. Now it's reasonably quiet at the packaging stations. The current Dutch export of around 20,000 tonnes is needed to get rid of the onion stock. The 30,000 ton sorting capacity is competition," says William. "There is a large volume in this area that hasn't been harvest yet either. And the closer it gets to winter, the bigger the chance of rain gets. The question is what quality these onions will have."

In 2007 Beemsterboer introduced the pink Crimsun onions onto the Dutch market. According to Nannes the demand for this niche onion is reasonable. "We have the same area of Crimsun onions this year as we did last year. Mainly buyers from Africa and Latin America value the unique properties of this onion. It's a reasonably late variety and that's where the challenge is, because these markets have to be served relatively early. In the coming year we will also present the Crimsun during the Fruit Logistica in Berlin."
