Kale, potatoes, milk: all local produce should have a mark of origin, says Helge Adolphs, Secretary of NGG South-Westphalia. The union advocates transparency in the sector. “Consumers ought to be able to trace the origin of the food they buy,” she states. “The days of anonymous vegetables are over. A local hallmark is good for customers, producers and retailers. It also benefits local employment and, because of the short distances, the environment.”
The union has urged government officials, as well as the European Parliament, to raise the issue in local politics. So far, the government responded favourably. “They agree that local economy is important,” says Adolphs. Besides the political appeal the union also aims to raise awareness among consumers.
