AU: $50 million mushroom farm saved from blaze

Fire crews were able to save a $50million Adelaide Hills mushroom farm from destruction after a blaze broke out in bales of straw last night.

While the damage bill is still estimated at up to $1.5million, the Monarto-based Mushroom Farm is able to operate as usual.

Workers raised the alarm just after 6pm yesterday when they spotted smoke coming from straw bales outside the compost production plant.

About 50 workers were evacuated while 40 firefighters battled the blaze, who worked through the night to prevent further damage to the structure.

Fire investigators do not believe the fire is suspicious, but they are checking vehicles that were seen in the area when it started.

While the clean-up is continuing, the general manager Russell Daniel said it will be business as usual.

"Fortunately that won’t be impacted at all, the mushroom production will continue on producing 130,000kg a week," he said.

"We’re grateful that no-one was hurt, but frustrated that we’ve had a fire."
