US: Mixed responses to retailers early Christmas start

This year some large US retailers are starting the Christmas shopping season early. Some retailers, including Walmart and Target are opening their doors for festive sales as early as 8pm on Thanksgiving, ahead of the traditional starting point of Black Monday.

The move follows from an early start to Black Friday sales last year, in a bid to attract shoppers in the current, poor economic circumstances.

There have been mixed reactions to the move. Some consumers say it is too early to think about Christmas, especially with the economy in the shape it is.

Jennifer Clappin of Tucson, Arizona disagrees. She likes the idea of getting a jump start on her holiday shopping for friends and loved ones.

"They're doing what they need to do," said Clappin. "I like that it's a little bit earlier. I've seen a lot of sales, which is nice. I don't feel like I have to run out right after Thanksgiving and be the first one in line."

Some employees disagree with the move, however, including Casey Renee, a Target employee, who has started "Target: Take the high road and save Thanksgiving," a petition on change.org urging retailers to "give Thanksgiving back to their employees."

Backed by more than 166,000 signatures, Renee calls the Thanksgiving Day openings, "inhumane and inconsiderate."

Some Walmart employees have threatened to strike.
