Ecuador: Asian markets draw in mango producers

The mango season in Ecuador is off to a good start. An estimated 400,000 crates are prepped for export. According to local entrepreneur Línder Bosco the success owes much to developments in the cultivation.

Another reason to be optimistic are the renewed ties with countries like China. Phytosanitary authorities have already met to discuss proper protocols. César Arturo Coello, head of a 1,800 hectare hacienda, says a party of Asian officials and technicians visited his farm three weeks ago to observe crops.

Coello states that conquering Asian markets is of the utmost importance to the sector. “This way we won’t have to rely on individual buyers. Over 80% of our mangos are now heading to the US. We tried shipping to Europe once, but that didn’t work out so well.”

“We don’t know yet when the trade with Asia can commence. It all depends now on agreements between governments.”
