Peru: Cranberries make unlikely apperance in Andes
The fruit is more typically associated with the boggy woodlands of Wisconsin, Massachusetts and New Jersey, but this causes some problems with supply. The US harvest season runs only for a small part of the year, whilst demand is strong year round.
Because of this cranberry related businesses are seeking potential cultivation sites in South America to widen the window of availability. Peru is currently the leading contender.
Peruvian growers are expected to plant an additional 275ha of cranberries this year, almost quadrupling the national cultivation of the fruit. The force behind the expansion is Sierra Exportadora, a public agency aiming to boost Peruvian export productivity.
The short-term goal is to plant 1,000 hectares of cranberries.
