Petra Wautaerts, LTV:

"Belgium: "Strawberry prices doubled in a week"

Finally the strawberry market looks like its going in the right direction as far as prices are concerned. "In the period of a week prices are going up and have even doubled," Petra Wautaerts of Limburgse Tuinbouw Veiling mentions. "The last few weeks the demand from the various markets has increased considerably. An example is Norway. In addition there are various promotions at retailers in England and Scandinavia. This causes demand and prices to be at a good level."

"Last week good quality strawberries were still between 80 and 90 cents for half a kilo and this week (23 October) it was between 1.60 and 1.70. This means doubling in a week. Possibly they may increase even more, but I do not expect large peaks. This year is not very good, therefore it is important for the growers, that the better prices will last a little while still in order to meet expenses. We supply strawberries till the end of the year and we will have to wait and see how the market will develop further. Possibly we will feel the competition from Egypt and Morocco again towards the end of November. Nevertheless part of the customers will still prefer Belgian strawberries."
