Frank Jansen:

"Netherlands: "Leek price good last month, now slight decrease in the market"

The price of leeks during the last few months at about 40 cents was at a good level. In the meantime the price has decreased to about 34 cents. The reason for the change in the leeks market is according to grower Frank Jansen from Etten-Leur the autumn holiday. "Leeks grew sufficiently during the last few weeks, therefore we now have to wait and see what will happen during the remainder of the year, but in any case we have had a good start."

According to Frank, who is both active in growing and in selling leeks, a lot of leeks went to the United Kingdom, which had a lot of rain damage. "Also Scandinavia bought a lot. The Dutch supply was, according to the man from Brabant, a lot less for a period, but is increasing now. The quality of the leeks is first class, according to Frank.

"The Autumn cultivation during the last years was not profitable and therefore the area decreased considerably. "When adding the unexpected large demand from the United Kingdom to this the market situation looks a lot better immediately," the grower concludes.
