Germany: Rewe to invest 20 million in Italian Billa supermarket

It was only months ago that German retailer Rewe sold off its 43 Billa supermarkets to Italian Conad. Rewe, however, still means to invest in the chain of Italian retailers. The Germans plan to invest 20 million Euro a year until 2016. Gotthart Klingan aims for Northern Italy, where the crisis has had less of an impact on consumer spending.

“We are a German company, and want to expand in places like Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli, Piedmont and Liguria,” says Klingan. He considers the initial selling of Billa as part of a larger scheme to expand interests in Northern Italy.
